Ten Green Myths
Myth #1: Changing to CFL
Light Bulbs Saves Power
Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb
will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
Fact:
There are no savings here and no savings for the environment
either. It really costs less and is better for the environment to
keep using regular incandescent
bulbs until you have changed your heating and lighting to an
alternative power source.
Here is why you don't save energy...
Incandescent
light bulbs produce a small amount of heat. You normally turn
more lights on in the winter. Removing this little bit of extra heat
from your home means that you
will have to use more oil, gas, electricity or wood to replace the heat
you lost.
Here is why you don't save the environment...
Compact
fluorescent
bulbs
are poisonous and harmful to humans and the
environment. These bulbs contain small amounts of mercury and we are
advised that most do not have a protective coating to block the
ultraviolet
rays, which is putting many people at the risk of skin cancer and
other ailments.
If a CFL should break you are supposed to follow rigourous steps to
clean up the contamination and they are not supposed to be put in the
regular garbage. Not many people know this and therefore we
should expect that millions of CFL's will end up in our landfill
causing mercury contamination.
Some of you will remember when government and health officials urged
everyone to stop using thermometers filled with mercury.
If you don't know about this here is a link to one of many articles on
the subject of harmful mercury .. Click
Here.
Our governments are fully aware of the risks with CFL's yet they
continue to spend billions of tax dollars promoting these products and
supporting the toxic industries that manufacture them.
Our Suggestion
Keep
using your regular light bulbs if you haven't switched to an alternative
lighting
and
power source like Brilyn's and make it known to your
government that it is a
crime against humanity for them to force you to use poisonous
compact
fluorescent bulbs.
Myth #2: Turn All Your Appliances and
Lights Off
Well, turning off all your power would probably reduce your power bills
no doubt, but this is a ridiculous solution.
Going green does not mean we all have to go back in time and live
like cave dwellers. We were smart enough to invent all these
technologies and we are smart enough to convert them to run on clean
alternative energy sources.
The standard appliances we buy are built with a transformer to
convert the power from grid source.
Years ago you were able to buy appliances that had the
transformer at the end of the power cord, which made it easy to remove
the transformer to use the appliance on an AC power source.
Now you will find that almost all appliances have the transformer
built inside the appliance, making it impossible for you to remove the
transformer without damaging the appliance.
Is it possible the manufacturers purposely designed them this way or
was it a convenience feature?
All we know is that there are a heck of a lot of appliances sitting in
our landfills just because the transformer died and since the
transformer is built in you might as well throw out the appliance too.
There are some 12
volt
DC
appliances
out there you just have to look for them, and with the help and support
of our members we are building up the products available in our catalog.
We
all
know
that if we create a demand for a product the manufacturers
will step in line and start offering them, so I say that if you want to
see more of them, start telling manufacturers you want them.
Our Suggestion
Brilyn can show you how to convert your home to one that has the best
of both worlds. You can have a 2kw
power
station
that uses wind, solar and alternative fuels to operate your appliances
and lighting and you can still have the grid connection available as a
backup.
It is easy for you to learn how, and all the plans are available to you just by becoming a member of Brilyn's Carbon Offset Co-op. You will be pleased to know that all membership fees go towards building more alternative solutions, and we consider your membership fee your carbon offset credit.
Myth #3: Use Pink Insulation and Fill
Those Cracks.
While filling the cracks in your walls will save on heating costs, this
solution is a green myth because using toxic
pink
insulation is by no means green. The problem with fiberglass
insulation stems from the formaldehyde binder used in the manufacturing
process.
If you want to take advantage of government grants for energy
efficiency all you have to do is get some poor soul to come in and puff
smoke through the holes in your walls and tell you to fill them up with
toxic pink insulation or squirt even more toxic putty into the wholes
around your pipes.
It is almost as if our governments are putting their full support into propping up the toxic industries. If our government grants were actually built around the idea of going green someone could have done some research like we did and explore the non toxic possibilites for insulation.
Our Suggestion
Make a visit to Home Depot in
Burnside and ask them for some Roxul Insulation
for your home instead of Pink. It is non toxic, has even better
insulating and fire resistant capabilities and you can even let it get
wet, dry it out and use it again.
Home Depot does have it, or at least they did have it and they are
distributors for it so if they have run out, tell them to hurry up and
get some more and put it at the front of the store so everyone can see
it and buy it.
Brilyn is an affiliate of Home Depot so if you would like to purchase your Roxul Insulation online you can click this link, put some non toxic warmth in your home and support our work at the same time.
Myth #4: Walk, bike, carpool or take the transit
You’ll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don’t drive!
Fact: Well this is not really a myth,
but it is "caveish."
Let's face it. While I am able to carry six green Sobeys bags
full of groceries on my electric
scooter
bicycle, I really would not be able to carry more than one
bag of Roxul
Insulation on the bus.
It is not realistic to think that many people are going to give up
their vehicles to go jump on a bus in rush hour and get squashed by a
million others. Again, we don't need to give up conveniences to
go green we just need to convert them to operate cleaner.
The truth is there are many technologies available to convert your
existing vehicles so that they don't emit carbon dioxide and these
technologies have been around since the introduction
of
the
car.
You haven't had the ability to enjoy them because there was always
more money to be made from oil and gas.
In fact over the years, automobiles have been specifically designed
to use more gasoline.
Even
our own government has come up with a new law that you have to have
your running lights on in the daytime.
They say it is for safety reasons but anyone can tell you that the more
you have running on your car the more fuel you will burn.
I still say if you can't see another car in the daylight, you should
be on the bus with those million people I spoke about.
Computers were installed in cars to make it harder for anyone to do
a conversion and the updated systems are even more dastardly.
For example, we were going to attempt a HAFC
kit
(hydrogen assist fuel cell) installation in a 2008
Hyundai.
The first step is to monitor the computer for fuel consumption
before you install the kit. It seems the new computers are
designed to recognize they are being monitored and after a short time
monitoring the computer does a master reset to default, erasing all
your data.
Technologies such as clean
fuels
from
waste products, electric drive trains and wheel
motors, hydrogen
on
demand
systems and more do exist, can be used and can sustain
the economy just as well as oil and gas.
If our financial investments in Canada were moved away from oil and
gas and into supporting greener technologies you would begin to see
more alternative solutions for transporation here in this country.
